[Ireland] EC-funded Scholarships for Citizens of ENP Countries and Russia to Obtain an MA in European Studies

The European Commission has launched a call to fund scholarships for the study of MA programmes in European integration. The scholarship of the European Commission covers up to €20,000 per student per academic year to cover fees and subsistence costs. For details on the scholarship, see this link. In total, approximately 150 scholarships will be available.

The UCD School of Politics and International Relations at University College Dublin invites applications to its MA in European Studies from citizens of European Neighbourhood Policy countries or Russia, who possess a first academic degree in either the social sciences or humanities (BA), and are in command of the English language.

Interested students should apply to the UCD School of Politics and International Relations through the normal channels by Wednesday, 28 May 2008, and normal entry procedures apply. UCD will then recommend to the European Commission successful applicants to our MA programme who also fulfil the scholarship criteria. Applications are invited for a funded three-year PhD Studentship position with the Research Institute for Networks and Communications Engineering (RINCE), Dublin City University, Ireland. Applicants should hold a higher honours degree in engineering, computer science or mathematics, be self-motivated and have a strong enthusiasm for pursuing new knowledge and solving problems in the general areas of mathematical modelling and optimisation of optical switching networks. Their research programme, leading to the degree of PhD, will focus on investigating, developing and validating mathematical methods for guaranteeing cost/performance levels in Optical Burst Switched networks through use of analytic network resource modelling, multi-objective non-linear optimisation techniques and design and implementation of discrete-event simulations. The closing date for applications is July 31st 2008 and the position will commence in autumn 2008.

The Lero Graduate School in Software Engineering (LGSSE), the main education initiative of Lero - the Irish Software Engineering Research Centre, offers a four-year PhD program provided jointly by the four leading Irish Universities involved in Lero (Dublin City University, Trinity College Dublin, University College Dublin and University of Limerick). The LGSSE program cycle begins in September 2008. The first year includes taught modules in research theory and practice, as well as technical software engineering modules. Also during the first year the candidate will prepare a research proposal that will be the basis for a three-year individual research project. In this way LGSSE combines the best features of the European and U.S.A. models of PhD education.

Candidates with an engineering, physics, materials science or applied mathematics background are being sought for a four-year Ph.D. scholarship in Computational Nanomechanics of Nanocomposites, beginning Autumn 2008. The outstanding mechanical properties of nanoscale fibres and tubes (e.g. carbon nanotubes) make them highly attractive as potential reinforcing constituents in polymer, ceramic or metal matrices to form the next generation of advanced composites. However, achievement of high performance materials through this approach requires major advances in processing methods and a fundamental understanding of the mechanics of nanoscale reinforcement, which can be quite different to micron-scale reinforcement. A combined Molecular Dynamics (MD) and Continuum Mechanics (CM) approach will be used to elucidate fundamental mechanics issues involved in nanoscale reinforcement in composite materials. MD will be used to develop nanoscale friction and failure laws for input to and validation of CM models for use in materials design studies. Two particular issues to be studied will be fibre-matrix pullout with varying geometric parameters, and fibre-fibre friction and inter-fibre bonding in nanotube/nanofibre bundles. The scholarship provides full funding for up to four years (subject to satisfactory progress) and covers an annual stipend to the student (beginning at €16,000 and rising in subsequent years), university fees for EU students, and funding for consumables and travel to conferences. NOTE: this does not preclude finishing is less than four years if progress is rapid. Non-EU students may apply, but should be aware that no additional funding is available to cover overseas tuition fees – this would take a large proportion of the annual stipend. The project is in collaboration with the prestigious solid mechanics group at Brown University, Rhode Island, USA, and the student will have the opportunity to spend time with Professor W.A. Curtin at Brown.

IRCSET’s Embark Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme is designed for either Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering or technology. 2008 Programme [First Call] NOW OPEN The Irish Research Council for Science, Engineering & Technology invites applications for funding from intending postgraduate researchers under the Embark Postgraduate Research Scholarship Scheme (2008). This first call in the 2008 programme will fund up to 165 Masters or Doctorate level researchers in the sciences, engineering and technology. The scheme is open to candidates worldwide with a number of scholarships also being available to exceptional candidates from non EU member states. A number of additional scholarships will be jointly funded by industry as part of IRCSET Enterprise Partnership Scheme (see below for details). University of Dublin, Trinity College Six Fully-funded Four-year Ph.D. Scholarships, Department of Political Science, Trinity College Dublin Starting October 2008, covering fees and stipends of up to €16,500. Our four-year doctoral programme is designed to give students the highest level of training to become scholars at the forefront of the discipline. Most of our Ph.D. graduates have gone on to careers in research and teaching at established universities, while others have gone on to careers in government and business.

PhD Studentships, Department of Chemistry, National University of Ireland, Maynooth, Co. Kildare, Ireland. Applications are invited from suitably qualified graduates to work on the topic ‘New Biodegradable Hydrogel Materials for the Delivery of Nitrification and Urease Inhibitors’ which is a collaborative project between the department of Chemistry at NUI Maynooth and Teagasc, Johnstown Castle, Co. Wexford, Ireland. Two positions are available and these are funded by the Department of Agriculture and Food, Dublin, Ireland. The overall objective of this project is the development of new biodegradable hydrogel materials that are capable of releasing, in a slow and sustained manner, nitrification or urease inhibitors to minimize the leaching of nitrates from soils and to limit the loss of nitrogen through gaseous emissions.

A Ph.D. position for carrying out arbitrage analysis of currency exchange rates using max-plus algebra, is currently available in the School of Mathematical Sciences, University College Cork, Ireland under the supervision of Professor Bernard Hanzon. The research in Financial Mathematics carried out in this PhD position will explore new possibilities to analyze arbitrage opportunities, or to prove that no-arbitrage conditions hold, and to construct and apply algorithms for this purpose. This forms part of a larger research project in Financial Algebra.
