At Department of Engineering Cybernetics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology we have available a PhD research fellowship position within the field of nanopositioning. Funding is for 3 years and startup is autumn 2008.

Several applications of nanopositioning have emerged during the last decade. An application where positioning is of great importance is scanning probe microscopes (SPM). These kinds of devices are used both for imaging at the nanoscale and manufacturing of advanced materials. The atomic force microscope (AMF) is one of the foremost tools for imaging, measuring and manipulation at the nanoscale. T he focus of the research will be analysis and control design for piezoelectric actuators in AFMs.

The ultimate goal of this work will be to increase the scan speed of the instrument in order to make possible imaging in close to real time. In turn, this will open up for applications like real time imaging of biological objects. A prerequisite for this is the ability to position the probe of the microscope with sub-nanometer accuracy and very high bandwidth. The research will encompass mathematical modeling, theoretical design and analysis, simulations and experimental work.

The research is to be carried out at The Department of Engineering Cybernetics in cooperation with NTNU NanoLab.

Benefits
PhD fellows are placed in salary code 1017, which currently corresponds to a yearly gross income of NOK 325 600 up to 431 500 (pay scale level 43 – 59). From this 2 % will be deducted for mandatory membership in the National Pension Fund.

TWO DOCTORAL FELLOWSHIPS IN RENEWABLE ENERGY (END USE OF PHOTOVOLTAIC TECHNOLOGY), UNIVERSITY OF AGDER, FACULTY OF ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE Ref 47/08 Two doctoral fellowships in End Use of Photovoltaic Technology are available at the University of Agder. The University wishes to fill these vacancies as soon as possible. The posts are in the Faculty of Engineering and Science which is located in Grimstad, Norway. The PhD positions are part of a project that takes place in cooperation between Elkem Solar, University of Agder, Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), Aalborg University and the municipality of Kristiansand, and are financed principally by the Research Council of Norway and Elkem Solar. The project title is “End Use of Photovoltaic Technology in Norway”. The principal hypothesis in the project is that solar electricity is a viable alternative even in Norway. From this vantage point the project aims to develop a scientific knowledge base that can be used to answer whether, and under which premises, the hypothesis is true. Furthermore, the project aims to develop algorithms, equipment and new power electronics, which should contribute in making solar based electricity more competitive. The knowledge accumulating in the project will possibly form a basis for a new industry within the end use segment of photovoltaic technology in Norway. The Faculty of Engineering and Science at the University of Agder cooperates with the Department of Electric Power Engineering at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU), and the Institute of Energy Technology at Aalborg University, Denmark, within PhD education in renewable energy, including electricity production from solar cells. The two doctoral fellows will work on separate parts of the project, but they form a team where the parts will mutually benefit from each other. It is therefore expected that the two doctoral fellows cooperate. For post 1 the focus will be on field measurements of photovoltaic systems and development of software and hardware based solar simulator systems, which are able to emulate the actual observed behaviour. For post 2 the focus will be on development of power electronics based interfaces for solar electric systems. The project description, which is the basis for the financing of the project from the Research Council of Norway, contains more detailed information, and can be sent to interested candidates on request. As part of their PhD-studies, the candidates must complete courses on relevant subjects at the doctoral level corresponding to half a year of full-time studies. This will take place at one of the cooperating institutions. It is expected that the candidates become an integrated part of relevant academic environments at the Faculty of Engineering and Science in the University of Agder. The posts require candidates with a Master’s degree or equivalent within a relevant area. A background in electrical power engineering, physics, electronics or similar could be suitable. However, an interest in power electronics is desirable for post 2. For both posts it is expected that the candidates have an interest in working with renewable energy in general, and end use of photovoltaic technology in particular. The applicants must fulfil the necessary demands for acceptance within the PhD-programmes at the cooperating institutions. It is a prerequisite that a doctoral fellow is accepted into such a programme within three months of their receiving an appointment. The posts require an ability to work in a goal-oriented, organized, concentrated and independent manner. Emphasis will be placed on personal qualifications and collaborative abilities. When assessing applications, emphasis will also be placed on the applicants previously awarded examination marks and relevant practice as well as any previously completed development work and/or published work. The working language is English. Knowledge in a Nordic language is an advantage. The doctoral fellowships are awarded for a time period of up to four years, with 25% teaching duties in the period. A more thorough definition of the field of work and other conditions are agreed upon at time of appointment. It is a prerequisite that the candidates aim towards finishing a PhD degree during the scholarship period. It may be necessary for the doctoral fellows to spend part of their time at external institutions or cooperating partners in Norway or abroad during the scholarship period. The doctoral fellows are, however, expected to spend most of their time at the University of Agder. It is expected that the doctoral fellows publish scientific papers in English, and that they participate at conferences as part of their PhD education.

Financial Assistance The Department of Financial Economics has available a number of PhD stipends starting in September 2008. The stipends are for a four year period and offer NOK315,000 per annum (approx. US$55,000) and also cover tuition fees. Each stipend contains a 35 hour per year teaching duty which usually consists of teaching assistant work. Academically excellent students should have a MSc in Finance or closely related subject. 2. Program Structure The PhD in Finance is taught entirely in English and is structured such that the first year of study covers course work and exams (60 ECTS credits). The Department of Financial Economics plans to offer the following courses in the 2008/2009 academic year: Asset Pricing Theory, Empirical Asset Pricing, Corporate Finance Theory, Market Microstructure, and Advanced Topics in Finance. Through the network it is possible to visit other schools for a short period in order to undertake courses. About the Department of Financial Economics The Department of Financial Economics is committed to excellence in research. Currently we have thirteen faculty members in research positions. A three-year position as research fellow (PhD position) is available at the Department of Mathematics. The position is part of the project “Geological Storage of CO2: Mathematical Modelling and Risk Assessment”, a joint effort of the University of Bergen and SINTEF Applied Mathematics, Oslo. The project aims at strengthening the scientific understanding of the risks associated with storage of CO2 for the purpose of reducing atmospheric emissions. The investigations are related to the study of non-linear partial differential equations arising from the multi-phase flow in porous media. Methods from Scientific Computing will be applied, i.e. the investigations will involve mathematical and numerical models, numerical simulations and their physical and mathematical interpretation. The candidate is expected to work in the multidisciplinary environment of the project (applied mathematics, computational science and engineering). The candidate is expected to spend 3 to 6 months abroad collaborating with international partners. Applicants must hold a masters degree in mathematics, physics or a similar education, or have submitted their master thesis for assessment by the application deadline. It is a prerequisite, however, that the examination results are out within 4 weeks of the closing date for submitting the master thesis.
